The Basics

Getting started firing with COBRA requires three components, the hand-held remote that controls your show, the field module responsible for activating the igniters, and the igniters themselves that are responsible for launching the effects.

18R2 Controller

The 18R2 Controller is the "brains" of the COBRA Firing System. This hand-held remote communicates with the firing modules in the field by sending and receiving commands. For example, sending firing commands, receiving continuity / igniter connectivity information, signal strength and battery levels.

Firing Modules

Modules are the "body" of the COBRA Firing System. These units sit in the field and communicate with the 18R2 remote. When a module receives a firing command from the 18R2, it sends electricity through the associated "cue" and fires the igniter, which is connected to the firework.

Igniters

Igniters are the ignition source to light the fireworks. One end connects to the fuse or port on the firework, and the other end connects to the firing module. When a module sends a command to fire, electricity is sent through the igniter and fires the fuse.

Types of Shows

The COBRA Firing System supports all types of shows including manual, automated, and pyromusicals. Please select a tab below to view more information on the type of show that applies to you including manual, automated, and pyromusicals.

COBRA is a unique system in that it's advanced features don't get in the way of the most basic firing features. For example, to manually fire a module, simply power on the hand-held remote, arm, and start pressing buttons. It's truly that simple!

We hope the above video explained the basics of the COBRA Firing System. In addition to basic manual firing, COBRA also supports other manual firing modes and additional manual firing enhancements.

STEP Firing

STEP Firing allows the operator to repeatedly press the STEP button to fire the next cue on the module. Once the module is completely fired, the remote increments to the next firing module channel automatically. The basic STEP firing feature simply increments to the next cue and channel, however you can pre-program the remote to fire different cues on different modules in any order.

Firing Memory Feature

The COBRA 18R2 Controller supports a unique firing memory feature which tells the operator which cues have been fired (red), which cues remain (green), and the last cue that has fired (blinking red). This feature is extremely helpful for manually fired shows where the operator is navigating back and forth between modules and firing different cues.

Control Panel Firing

The COBRA Control Panel is a complete user interface into the COBRA 18R2 Controller. The Control Panel includes a variety of features including a manual firing interface which allows you to label modules, cues, and see a complete firing history of your show. This interactive UI makes basic manual firing simple and powerful for the operator.

What Do I Buy?

The 18R2 is the brains of the COBRA Firing System, responsible for firing your show.

Firing modules are available in 6, 18, 36, and 72 cues, alongside various connection options designed to meet your specific needs.

Igniters connect to both firing modules and the product itself. Choose from instant ignition or consumer clip-on versions.

All starter kits come with an 18R2 Controller and your choice of firing module configuration. You will also have the option to add COBRA Show Creator, protective accessories, or SMPTE support to this kit.

Scripting is the process of creating/designing your show in advance, so you can sit back and enjoy the display with your audience. Automating a show with COBRA is a very simple process.

We hope the above video explained the basics of automating a show using COBRA Show Creator. COBRA offers a wide variety of scripting options to give you the ultimate control over semi-automatic and fully automatic shows. Simply define your show, press a button and let the controller do the work.

Timed Event

Timed event scripting is the automatic firing of cues based on pre-programmed event times. For example, you can have the first cue fire at 0 seconds, the next cue at 13.2 seconds, the next cue at 30.4 seconds, etc... There is no limit to the number of modules and cues you can fire at the same time. COBRA can fire at 1/100th of a second resolution. At any time you can pause the show, or even skip to the next event by pressing the STEP button.

STEP

STEP Scripting is one of the most popular features of the COBRA 18R2 Controller. This feature allows you to pre-program the remote to fire any cue on any module in any order by repeatedly pressing the STEP button. Simply use our Scripting Software to enter in each channel and cue you wish to fire in the planned order. You can fire unlimited modules at the same time, even if the modules are on different channels. When you start your script, simply press the STEP button and the event is automatically fired. By using this feature, you can keep your eye on the show and your finger on a single button.

STEP / Timed Event

COBRA has the unique ability to create scripts that include both STEP events and timed events combined. For example, you can program the script to fire STEP events and then go into automatic timed event sequences. You can go back and forth between STEP and timed events as often as you want.

Scripting Software

COBRA offers a variety of methods for creating scripts. These include:

Microsoft Excel Template

COBRA offers simple excel templates that can be used to generate the required cobra.csv script file. Simply type in the events you wish to fire including both STEP and timed events, save the file to a USB thumb drive and load into your controller. The template is free to download and use. See User Guides to download example templates.

COBRA Show Creator

COBRA Show Creator is a comprehensive scripting software for creating and editing musical and non-musical scripts for your 18R2 Controller. The software is web-based (www.cobrashowcreator.com) and is available in both PC and MAC environments by operating on the Chrome web-browser only. In addition, the software can operate in offline mode without internet to support the basic functions such as script creation, editing, and export.

Finale 3D

The Ferrari of visual pyromusical design software, Finale 3D is a powerful and easy-to-use software for designing the most complex pyromusicals. In addition, Finale boasts a comprehensive amount of features including inventory and equipment management, automatic channel / cue assignement, field layout positioning, and much more... Learn More

We hope the above video explained the basics of creating and firing a pyromusical using COBRA Show Creator and SMPTE. COBRA offers a variety of methods to fire a pyromusical.

SMPTE

SMPTE (pronounced "simpty") is a way to shoot your fireworks show synchronized to music by sending an audio feed from your sound system to the  COBRA 18R2  without using a COBRA Audio Box. Learn more

COBRA Audio Box

The Audio Box is a stand-alone wireless device for playing audio into any sound system. Simply load your audio file to a USB thumb drive, place the drive into the COBRA audio box, and connect the audio box to your sound system. When you start the script on the 18R2 Controller, the audio will play in perfect synctronization from the Audio Box. If you pause your show, the Audio Box will pause automatically. Once resumed, the audio picks up in perfect sync.

Countdown Method

By synchronizing your show's start with your audio start, you can easily add audio to a display using any audio device. This can be achieved by counting down from three and pressing the trigger button on the remote with one hand while pressing the play button on your audio device at the same time with the other hand.
