Important Update Regarding Command Centers

Dec. 29th 2022

COBRA was made aware of a possible hardware fault with the COBRA Command Center. While this fault only applies to Command Center units that are utilizing the Deadman Control feature, it is advisable that all owners of the Command Center apply this fix. The issue relates to a loose lock washer potentially coming in contact with exposed wire pins that could cause for an inadvertent firing issue.

2022 Fall Price Adjustments

October. 13th 2022

As we announced last week, we are implementing some price adjustments. We were hoping to keep prices steady throughout the 2nd half of 2022, but continued rising costs in nearly every aspect of production, supply chain, engineering, and logistics have made an increase necessary.

Why are we increasing pricing?

We know the above statement sounds generic, but simply put, our suppliers are increasing prices on processors, transceivers, memory chips, peripherals, and other key integrated circuits. This is happening on supplier orders previously placed with existingpricecommitments. In addition, some parts have lead times exceeding 100 weeks which requires us to use different parts which require board re-engineering, added setup fees, testing, code changes, and other efforts to ensure the product we ship will work safely and reliably.

While we try to absorb some of the cost increases, it's critical for us to maintain the same level of world-class customer support, hassle-free lifetime warranty, and continuous free firmware updates, which do not generate any direct revenue. Rising operational costs with inflation and other factors in all areas of the business make this change necessary.

For the sake of transparency, we have put together a complete list of the items that are having price increases, including the previous and new prices. These changes are currently live.

18R2 LiPo Kit Now Available

April 25th 2022

We are excited to announce the 18R2 LiPo Upgrade Kit. You can install the kit into any 18R2 Controller to add LiPo recharge functionality and external USB power input.

The built-in 2,000 mAh LiPo battery improves the life of the 18R2 from around 8 (AA) to 20 hours (LiPo).

The AA batteries function as a real-time backup and will seamlessly take over with no functional interruption if any power is lost from the LiPo battery.

The charger both powers and charges the remote at the same time. You can leave the charger plugged in during a show to ensure constant full power. The charger is the same as our module charger.

The upgrade process is performed with only a screwdriver; Unscrew four screws to open the 18R2, connect the upgrade kit, add and connect the battery, and reassemble.

2022 Price Adjustments

Jan. 5th 2022

As we announced before our Black Friday sale, we are implementing some price adjustments for 2022.

We have been able to keep prices steady throughout 2021; however, rising costs in nearly every aspect of the production, supply chain, reengineering due to IC part shortages, and logistics have made this increase a necessity in order to continue offering the same level of service, quality, and overall customer experience. Due to the increased cost of logistics and raw materials, you will notice more significant increases on items that are heavy in copper, such as igniters, Pro-Adapt plates, and slat cables.

COBRA is also continually investing heavily into research and development with the launch of the Command Center, 6M, SMPTE, 5.1 and 6.0 firmware, DMX, COBRA Reprogramming Software, our online help portal, and much more. 2022 will bring new products and improvements to existing products; we are excited to continue expanding our COBRA offerings and improving upon our lineup of time-tested, quality products.

For the sake of transparency, we have put together a complete list of the items that are having price increases, including the previous and new prices. These changes are currently live.

    Dec. 1st 2021

COBRA is proud to announce the addition of Finale 3D to our website.

Finale 3D is a powerful show scripting suite that fully supports COBRA equipment.

Featuring high-quality simulations, audio editing, inventory management, rack layouts, and customizable reports and labels, Finale 3D is genuinely an all-in-one powerhouse that will enhance and improve the entire process of show planning from start to finish.

Finale 3D is available in two different versions, Hobbyist or Pro. The license for both versions is for one PC for one year.

    Hobbyist - $349.00 per year

Finale 3D Hobbyist gives backyard enthusiasts and semi-professional choreographers the power to dazzle their audiences by designing and shooting professional-grade outdoor shows for neighbors, clubs or conventions using the most powerful fireworks design software in the world — at a much lower price.

    Pro - $1,049.00 per year

Finale 3D Pro is for display companies, professional choreographers, and hobbyists who want the most powerful fireworks design software in the world. Its real-time 3D user interface enables designers to create indoor and outdoor designs of higher quality than ever before possible, and its ultra-HD simulation videos, rack layout, and custom reporting engine give businesses a competitive edge.

6.0.4 BETA Release, DMX, & More - Now Available

    May. 28th 2021

COBRA is excited to release BETA firmware version 6.0.4 boasting a series of new core equipment features including DMX, scripted event re-firing / variable pulse times, 3,600 cue support, and more...

    • COBRA DMX - Upgrade your 36M/72M to support DMX output to control stage lighting, flame machines, and other SPFX equipment while firing pyro at the same time. You can use COBRA Show Creator or Finale3D to create scripts that support up to 100 DMX universes across 200 DMX channels at 1/100th timing resolution. COBRA currently only supports the 36M/72M for DMX output.

    • Scripted Re-Firing and Variable Pulse Times - The 18R2 now supports re-firing of cues within a script across unlimited channels at 1/100th section timing resolution. In addition, you can fire cues for a specified pulse time duration. This is helpful for controlling SPFX devices such as flame projectors and cryo jets that don't support DMX, and instead, have some type of external input trigger. This functionality is only supported in the primary (first) script within the 18R2. All hardware devices support re-firing with the exception of the 18M hardware version A.

    • 200 Channel / 3,600 Scripted Events - COBRA now supports 200 channels (0-199) and 400 unique device addresses for a total of 3,600 scripted events or manually fired cues. This is supported across all devices including the 18R2, 6M, 18M, 36M, and 72M. The legacy 18R will continue to support only 100 channels (0-99).

    • Hold to Fire - When pressing buttons to manually fire cues, the cue will fire as long as your finger is pressing the button. If your module is in Talon mode, the cue will fire for at least two seconds before turning off.

A new version of COBRA Show Creator is also released to include DMX support for the 36M and 72M. Other updates include custom fields in my fireworks, drag and drop support for alternate events, waveform cue drawer drag and drop support, and more

Lastly, the COBRA Control Panel has been upgraded to support 6.0.4 and DMX for 36M and 72M.

Please review the firmware version release notes for each product below.

    World Record 62" Shell

    April 14th 2021

A great promo video by the Passfire team on the largest firework shell shot by COBRA. Fired at over 3,000 ft., we are super proud to have been part of the process. While we are an active sponsor of the Passfire series, the largest shell team chose COBRA independently without any affiliation or endorsement from our team. Congratulations, James Cowden Widmann, Eric Krug, Ed MacArthur, and Tim Borden, for this amazing accomplishment!

    Quickplug Breakout Boards Now Available

    Mar. 24th 2021

You asked and we delivered, Quickplug Breakout Boards are now available for purchase in series or parallel versions.

Quickplug breakout boards are a convenient solution for wiring multiple Quickplug igniters to a single cue.

Available in both series or parallel wiring options, use the Quickplug Harness to connect the breakout board "Input" port to any cue on your module. The harness is a separate option when adding this item to the shopping cart.

You can plug up to five igniters you wish to fire simultaneously into the remaining ports on the breakout board. While using the Breakout Board, you will still need to stay within the maximum firing specifications for the igniters you are using.

For the series breakout board, place the switch to the Igniter position for wired ports and No Igniter for empty ports.

If you wish to wire your breakout board further from the module, we suggest re-using Quickplug connector ends from fired igniters spliced together with shooting wire.

We will either send you replacement equipment, a prepaid label to ship your equipment back for repair, or both, depending on the situation.

This change applies to all COBRA equipment, regardless of purchase date. This also applies to COBRA equipment that has transferred ownership.

In short, if you own a piece of COBRA equipment, we will stand behind it 100%, no matter when, where, or from whom you purchased it.

    2020 Year End Recap

    Jan. 1st 2021

While we have been unable to travel and attend as many events as we wanted to this year, we still had a very active year. From new product releases to brand new platforms and systems, COBRA has been very busy!

This year, we released firmware version 5.1.1 / 2. This release is a stable release candidate for the 5.0 series, including MESH functionality across all hardware platforms.

5.1.1 / 2 boasts new features, including COBRA SMPTE, which allows users to execute pyromusicals from a single sound source and integrate other 3rd party systems that drive SPFX applications such as DMX.

Other featured items including a 2x increase in device connection time, script comments, script/audio filename improvements, and more.

Within the 5.1.1/ 2 firmware release,SMPTE was introduced. SMPTE (pronounced "simpty") is a way to shoot your fireworks show synchronized to music by sending an audio feed from your sound system to the COBRA 18R2 without using a COBRA Audio Box

You can also send the same audio feed to other systems (such as DMX and lighting) to synchronize them together with your COBRA system.

COBRA Show Creator is a comprehensive scripting software for creating and editing musical and non-musical scripts for your 18R2 Controller. The software is web-based (www.cobrashowcreator.com) and is available in both PC and MAC environments.

Other featured items including a 2x increase in device connection time, script comments, script/audio filename improvements, and more.

COBRA Reprogramming Software is a step-by-step Windows PC application used for upgrading firmware on the COBRA modules, remotes, and the Audio Box. Once you have purchased the COBRA Wireless Reprogrammer, the software is available for free download.

Our new Help Portal contains a massive amount of information on our equipment including documents on:

COBRA Classroom is a series of digital-based training sessions we ran in 2020. We ran 11 of these sessions and will be continuing these for new product/feature/firmware releases. All of these sessions are available for viewing on Youtube.

2020 might have been a slow year, but that did not stop our clients from lighting up the sky. We posted four client showcases this year, highlighting some incredible displays:

In late September, Joel traveled to Wright City, MO, to attend Sky Wars, a rebranded Pyromania.

As we look towards the new year, packed with exciting new opportunities, we wanted to take a moment to thank you for being part of the COBRA Family.

From ours to yours, have a great New Year!

    5.1.2 Firmware Update

    Dec. 10th 2020

We have performed a few firmware changes that have resulted in an update to the COBRA 5.1.1 firmware. If you have just purchased a new system on 5.1.1, rest assured we will ship your equipment to you on the updated 5.1.2 firmware. The 5.1.2 patch release addresses a few use cases involving newly added functionality in 5.1.1 and some minor signal reporting and audio timing bugs. If you are using the COBRA Control Panel, please upgrade your app to 2.2.1 from the Google Play store.

Please find detailed changes below along with upgrade instructions. If you have any questions, you can email us at [email protected] or call us at (518) 741-4300.

We thank you for your patience and understanding with this small patch update, as our goal is to deliver the best experience possible with our systems to all of our customers. If you have recently received any of these units on 5.1.1 or have updated your equipment, you will need to upgrade them to 5.1.2. If you purchased a new customer promotional system during our Black Friday 2020 sale, these will be shipped on firmware version on 5.1.2.

The patch release only applies to the following devices.

    • 18R2
    • 36M / 72M
    • Audio Box (A and B hardware)

The following devices will remain on version 5.1.1, as they are not affected by this patch release:

    • 18R (A or B hardware)
    • 18M (A or B hardware)
    • 6M
    • Any other hardware

To learn how to upgrade your COBRA systems, please see How to Upgrade COBRA Firmware.

If you are not looking to read the entire article below, we have provided a quick summary below. Please email us at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

    5.1.2 Quick Summary

Update #1 - Temporarily disabled multiple script file functionality

The 18R2 no longer supports loading more than one script file from the USB drive. This is due to customers accidentally loading more than one script file and having a chance for the desired script file load as a "non-primary" script, which will not fire more than two channels in any 0.4s time period. This could result in portions of the show not firing without the user being aware of this depending on how thorough their dry run is. The 18R2 still supports multiple scripts with any filename but will display an error if multiple .csv files are detected, and will not load scripts. In addition, the COBRA Control Panel will no longer support selecting a script to become a primary script due to improvements required to the user interface to ensure the script is selected correctly and loaded. COBRA will add this functionality back shortly so this feature can be supported by users.

Update #2 - 36M/72M in some cases displaying 18R2 signal strength vs. MESH signal strength

In some cases, the 36M/72M would not report the signal strength received from the MESH network and instead would display the signal strength received from the 18R2. This was a benign reporting issue and did not affect the signal performance of the 36M/72M or overall COBRA system.

Update #3 - Audio box hardware A may play audio slightly early by about 100-200ms

In some cases, the Audio Box A hardware may play the audio slightly early by about 100-200ms.

If you would like to read about the updates in more detail, please find the below detailed explanations.

    5.1.2 Detailed Update

Update #1 - Temporarily disabled multiple script file functionality

One of the improvements we made to the recent 5.1.1 firmware release is to support loading multiple script files from the USB drive with any desired filename. Previously, within earlier firmware versions, you could only load one script file, and the name had to be "cobra.csv". If you wanted to load multiple scripts prior to 5.1.1, you had to combine multiple scripts into a single cobra.csv script file. Within that single script file, the first script in the file is the "primary script", which supports unlimited channels/cues. Any other scripts in the script file are called "non-primary" scripts and do not support firing more than two channels in a 0.4s time period.

The key difference between primary and non-primary scripts is that the primary script is uploaded into the modules in advance of the show. The non-primary script is fired through real-time commands from the 18R2. By uploading the script in advance, the modules fire as stand-alone devices based on a light periodic timeclock signal from the 18R2.

With the improvement to 5.1.1 to support loading multiple script files from the USB drive, we believe that customers will accidentally load multiple saved script files from their USB drive into their 18R2 without knowing it. This is because customers can now save files as any filename and will save them to their COBRA USB drive over time.

When placing the USB drive into the 18R2, the 18R2 will "self-select" one of the multiple script files to become the primary script. All other script files will load as non-primary scripts. If the script you desire to fire is not loaded as the primary script by the 18R2, it will fire as a non-primary script, which has the restriction of not firing more than two events that fire within any 0.4s time period. If the user is unaware of this and does not perform a detailed dry-run of their show to notice, any events that violate the timing restriction of non-primary scripts would not fire. This would be a significant failure and one that we believe will happen commonly with the current design with the user unaware of the potential issue.

The following changes were performed to address this issue:

    1) The 18R2 no longer supports loading multiple .csv files from the USB drive. However, the filename can still be unique as you do not need to name the file "cobra.csv". If multiple .csv files are detected on the USB drive, Er1 will display on the 18R2, and no script files will be imported. If you wish to keep multiple COBRA .csv script files, we suggest you place them into a directory on your USB drive.

    2) The COBRA Control Panel will no longer support selecting a script to become a primary script due to improvements required to the user interface to ensure the script is properly selected and loaded. COBRA will add this functionality back shortly so this feature can be supported by users.

Update #2 - 36M/72M in some cases displaying 18R2 signal strength vs. MESH signal strength

The 36M/72M firing modules had a logic issue whereby signal reported from other devices other than the 18R2 were not included when displaying their "best" MESH signal within a defined five-second interval. This means that the 36M/72M would, in some cases, display a signal value worse than what it was actually receiving from the MESH network. This issue was a benign, reporting-only issue and did not affect the module's performance or the overall COBRA system.

Update #3 - Audio box hardware A may play audio slightly early by about 100-200ms

In some cases, the Audio Box A hardware may play the audio slightly early by about 100-200ms. The offset is now correct as the Audio Box A hardware version has been adjusted. We also suggest upgrading the Audio Box B hardware as a much smaller adjustment of about 30ms was performed.

    Remote Armored Case Foam Updated!

Switching to new foam and a new process for customization allowed us to add a storage slot in the foam for batteries, keys, flash drives, and other small items. In addition to the new storage slot, this foam insert will be more durable than our previous pick and pluck foam. It is included with an armored case purchase or purchasable individually. If you want to upgrade the foam in your armored case, this is as simple as purchasing the Foam for Remote Armored Carrying Case and dropping it into your current armored case.

COBRA Backyard Choreography Contest Winners Announced!

    Aug. 7th 2019

After a few days of deliberation, we are ready to announce the winners of the COBRA Backyard Choreography Contest!

The criteria we were using to judge these shows encompassed timing, originality, use of shoot site, variety of fireworks, creativity, layering, symmetry, and timing.

To be able to judge all of these shows fairly and in their entirety, we assigned each tier to a different team member. All shows were watched and scored, using the criteria above, and the top five from each category were then watched by the other tier judges. We then met and chose the best show from each category. It was not an easy task to pick one winner from each tier, as there were many incredible shows to choose from.

We wanted to extend a HUGE thank you to everyone who entered their show, without you we would not have been able to make this contest a reality!

    Quickplugs Now Available!

    June 12th 2019

We are incredibly excited to formally debut our newest product line, Quickplugs!

    Igniters

A quickplug is a small plug that comes pre-installed on your Talon Igniter Clips and MJG Initiators. This allows you to easily plug your igniter directly into the cue. Igniters with quickplugs installed are sold at the same price as our traditional igniters. When you purchase these, you are given the choice to purchase them with either quickplugs, or traditional wire end.

    Conversion Kits

If you are interested in converting your current equipment to support quickplugs, we have you covered! All COBRA equipment is able to be converted to support quickplugs. We have laid out the different options you can select based on the equipment you currently own and how you plan to use it on our new quickplug landing page.

    Firing Modules

If you are looking to purchase new equipment, all of our firing module packages that contain slats have been updated to include quickplug slats instead of mini slats. This means the price you see as the baseline for these products will be slightly different than it was before this launch. Nothing has increased in price, but the pricing has been reworked to include the quickplug slats as the included slat. We are also releasing 18M, 36M, and 72M modules with onboard quickplugs.

    36M & 72M Critical Firmware Update

    Jun. 11th 2018

We discovered two minor issues in the current 5.0.2 BETA firmware for the 36M and 72M. It is important that you update your current devices in order to avoid any issues. Please find an explanation of the issues below and how to update your devices. Please note that this issue is on the 36M and 72M only.

Issue #1: The 36M and 72M may not show continuity if the internal temperature exceeds around 110°F or 43°C. For example, this can occur in ambient temperatures as low as 80°F or 27°C when the unit is exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Please note that even though the 36M and 72M would not show continuity, this would not prohibit the unit from firing. This firmware update will fix this issue.

Issue #2: The 36M and 72M may not show continuity for certain Talon igniter clips due to having a higher resistance value. This has been resolved as continuity will now display for those Talons. This could occur in as high as 20% of Talons. This patch release will fix this issue.

    How to fix?

To fix the device, please perform the following steps:

    1. Download the 90m.s19 and save to a USB drive
    2. Insert the USB drive into your 36M or 72M.
    3. Hold SYNC and turn the key to the TEST or ARM position. Red LEDs
will light side to side. Once complete, restart the device. The
      device is now running 5.0.3.
